Eight Arrested in Drug Raid at South End 'Problem Property'

Thursday Jan 23, 2025

Suffolk County law enforcement conducted a raid at a notorious South End property on Monday, November 4, 2024, resulting in eight arrests and the seizure of multiple illegal substances, District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced.

The search, carried out by Boston police's drug control and human trafficking units at 231 West Newton Street, targeted a location that has generated 59 reported incidents in the past year alone. Officers discovered various illegal substances including Fentanyl, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, Suboxone, and Diazepam, along with cash.

"We know that it takes just one problem property or a few problem individuals to degrade the quality of life in entire neighborhoods," Hayden stated. "Actions like this help communities strengthen themselves."

Among those arrested was Jonathan Winters, 44, who faces charges for possession of a Class B substance and had outstanding warrants. Christopher Hicks, 35, charged with multiple drug possession counts including intent to distribute, failed to appear at his arraignment, prompting an arrest warrant.

Aaron Howell, 41, initially arrested on an outstanding warrant for Class A substance possession, had his warrant removed Wednesday and will appear in Cambridge court at a later date. David Aylward, 27, faces charges for possession of Class A and B substances.

Additional arrests included Schanwat Wilailak, 36, and Michael Collins, 66, both charged with Class C substance possession, and Joseph Brodie, 55, arrested on an outstanding larceny warrant. Richard Souza, 37, was arrested for outstanding warrants and Class C substance possession but was released on personal recognizance.

Brodie, Collins, and Wilailak each received $1,000 bail and are scheduled for pre-trial hearings in early December. Winters and Aylward, held on $500 bail each, are also due to appear in court in early December.

The property has been a longstanding concern for the South End community, according to officials.
